The end of the Kájoni Path
The CentriFUGA is bringing their music to the final station of their recent tour; back to their „nest”, the FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture. Eszter Aradiné-Agárdi (cello), Péter Tornyai (viola), and Zsanett Szatzker (accordion) will once again perform my trio, Kájoni út. Singing Youth in the United Arab Emirates
Our theatrical work Singing Youth (co-authors: Judit Böröcz and Bence György Pálinkás) has made it to a country outside of Europe for the first time. The production has been invited by the Sharjah Art Foundation, and will be performed by the usual group of the six brilliant singers Benjámin Bozi, Péter Fehérváry, György Juhász, Maxim Jurin, Katalin Mezei, and Eszter Sokhegyi.

Nova Scotia in Hampshire
Baroque violinist friend Rudolf Raymund Balázs is going to bring my solo piece Nova Scotia to Hampshire a few months after the successful London premiere of the piece. We are offering a offers a diverse collection of solos and two-part compositions for recorder and violin that traverse time, starting from ancient Greek music and progressing through the works of Francesco Barsanti in the 18th century.

The Voice of the Violin: the Premiere of Nova Scotia

Unfinished Contrapunctus
Thirteen contemporary reflections on Bach’s unfinished contrapunctus from the Art of Fugue. All the composers are members of CentriFUGA, a platform for contemporary music, many concerts of which have been hosted by FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture, a symbolic place that is undergoing significant changes at the moment posing risks to the contemporary art scene in Hungary. New Version of Highlanders’ Companion
Two months after its premier, my piece a Highlanders’ Companion for Tuneful Life Events will be performed in a new and extended version by János Bali, Bálint Bolcsó, Roderick Hill, Virág Hofbauer, Krisztina Megyeri, Gábor Monostori and Anna Páljános. The concert is the first event of a series of performances featuring works by artirsts of the Hermina Collective. Further events will take place on 21st and 27th November.

What did Singing Youth sing in the 1950s and what do they sing today? What messages are conveyed through their songs from positions of power? What ideas are embodied by the works of art commissioned and put on display in public space? Which artists are frequent performers at political party events? What do the favourite bands of the regime sing about? Do you sing along?
Makris Agamemnon’s statue, Singing Youth was erected at the passage leading to the People’s Stadium in 1953 and it has been standing there until this day along with other statues, surviving the regime change, when many artworks made in the socialist era were removed from public space. The stadium was torn down and a new one, the Puskás Arena was built, re-using crushed concrete from its predecessor. Singing Youth, double life-size aluminium figures of two girls and a boy with a flute, bear witness to the last 70 years of Hungarian history full of turbulent times, during which music and culture in general remained important in young people’s lives and was a key tool for politicians to communicate or promote their ideas, ideologies.
The People’s Stadium (1953) represented the success of the first five-year plan, the Puskás Arena is the symbolic building of the System of National Cooperation. They were both built using public funds; the first dedicated to the people, the second to the nation. These two phrases seem similar but they convey different interpretations of us. Singing Youth took popular movement songs from 1945-56 and pop, rock, songs from 2010-20 (associated with the regime) as a departure point along with public speeches from those in power to make a collage of text and music dealing with these interpretations.
The three figures of Singing Youth are doubled on stage: our world as represented in these songs, come to life through the performance of six young singer-performers.
Highlanders’ Companion for Tuneful Life Events
My new piece Highlanders’ Companion for Tuneful Life Events was programmed in Garten Festival 2021, and was performed on 15th August in Felsőörs, in a version specifically made for members and friends of BIO (Budapest Improvisers Orchestra).
5 Sad Ayres from South of England
József Rácz and Dóra Pétery performed my piece for violin and harpsichord for the first time. The premier took place in the first hour of the concert-marathon dedicated to architect Bálint Nagy on 24th May 2021.
…senza basso – sulla natura della rimembranza
Originally written for baroque flute, …senza basso – sulla natura della rimembranza was played in a new version for modern flute by Hajnalka Csepregi on 9th March 2021 in the second concert of the 3rd Festival of Young Composers, Szeged.
The Book of Sonatas for Viols
The complete series of my viol sonatas will be performed in a concert along with interludes composed specifically for the event by composers Bálint Horváth, Máté Balogh, Csanád Kedves, Péter Tornyai and Lőrinc Szécsi. For the first time, the sonatas will be played in their original version for viols by Nóra Kallai, Júlia Regős and Réka Nagy.

Post-lockdown Premieres
I will return to the concert life with two premieres. My 2016 woodwind trio Heat and my brand new trio St Kilda Variations will be performed by an outstanding group of musicians, Béla Horváth (oboe), Csaba Klenyán (clarinet, bass clarinet), Ramóna Tóth (bassoon), and András Németh (piano). The latter was supposed to be programmed for a concert in March, but it was not even completed by then, as with all the dramatic twists, cancellations, and generally with the life coming to a halt, deadlines just became absolutely meaningless. From then, writing the piece was like writing a kind of a quarantine diary. Not many of my music do reflect with such transparency to how I live, how I cope, how I observe and how I long for things; and although this one too has a more abstract layer, I would have elaborated it in a very different way before the “great isolation”.

Eastern Lines
Easter Lines is a piece for an ensemble of unlimited number of recorders, which was written as an outcome of a join project with visual artist Anna Peternák. The piece will be premiered in the opening concert for the exhibition ‘Passageway’ featuring works by members of Hermina Artist Collective. Recorder players: János Bali, Balázs Bánfi, Júlia Kaposi, Máté Szigeti, Éva Valóczki-Bánfi. Hometown Premier
String players currently studying in my hometown Szeged, premiered a piece from my Book of Sonatas for Viols. The string trio version of Segunda sonata was played by Kleopátra Tulpán, Gergely Kálmán and Dóra Károlyi on 13th March, in the final concert of the Second Festival of Young Composers, Szeged.
Re-contextualised Gamelan
An extraordinary programme featuring pieces for gamelan and other kinds of percussive instruments, objects, piano and electronics written by composers of centriFUGA. As part of the concert, my piece Colonial Times – 19 Small Islands near West Java will be premiered by the members of Surya Kencana A, János Nevelő, Dzsanda Vitalij, András Térfy, and myself. The concert is an event of Transparent Sound New Music Festival.

Das Wohltemperierte Streichquartett
The Classicus Quartet has launched an epic series of concerts: each event of their project features pieces based on one particular note of the chromatic scale from C to B. The twelve-part series will be extended by 4 more ‘intermezzo-concerts’. (See more details in the webpage of Classicus Ensemble). My piece Second Movement (Beethoven) which is also part of my work Late Quartet will be played in the second concert, along with string quartets by Mozart, Schubert and Shostakovitch, all based on the note ‘C’.

New Hungarian Song on Cultural Heights and Depths
A neo-baroque cantata based on a speech by MP Zoltán Balog. The text is about culture, funding, healthcare, education, and lamb stewing. The piece will be performed twice in the same week.

Quatuor Bozzini

Summary about the past 12 months
Since I have not updated the News for a year, instead of advertising future concerts, I am going to write an annual report about the most important events of 2015.
On 21st June, we were celebrating Gyula Csapó on his 60th birthday. Although I was unable to attend the concert in Budapest, I had written a piece (Liederbuch) especially for the event. (Details)
A couple of days later, on 24th, my chamber piece La cinquiéme chanson de Jaufré Rudel got premiered on the closing concert of St. Magnus Composition Course in Kirkwall (Orkney Islands). (Details)
After I got back from Scotland, I had the good fortune to work with Norwegian percussionist Håkon Stene, on my piece, Niemandsland for vibraphone and objects, on a workshop at Turner Sims Hall, Southampton featuring other composers from the Department. The series of workshops ended with the ensemble Plus Minus this year. My recent piece In the Lovers’ Orchard written for 3-6 freely chosen instruments and piano, was played on clarinet, violin, electric guitar, and piano on the workshop held at Turner Sims Hall on 2nd November.
Remembrance Day Weekend
An eventful weekend with talks, public rehearsals, a composition workshop, and most of all: the UK premiere of Michael Finnissy’s large-scale work Remembrance Day for soloists, choir and orchestra. On Saturday morning, the Exaudi vocal ensemble will be performing pieces written by Southampton composers. Among these, my piece Place me on Sunium’s marbled steep is going to be sung.
